Tiny froglets, big hope at London Zoo

A small but encouraging London wildlife update: fifteen rare froglets have been born through a UK–Ghana conservation partnership. The original announcement was published on 13 October.

Fifteen tiny frogs mark a first for conservation

London Zoo has bred Afia Birago's puddle frogs for the first time in human care. The tiny arrivals are part of a conservation programme with Ghanaian partners.

London Zoo announced fifteen Afia Birago's puddle froglets on 13 October. Around five millimetres long, they follow the arrival of twenty adult frogs from Ghana in 2025.

The species lives in Ghana's Atewa Hills Forest Reserve, where its habitat is under pressure from mining. ZSL is working with Herp Conservation Ghana and the CSIR-Forestry Research Institute of Ghana.

The breeding knowledge is being shared with colleagues in Kumasi to support conservation populations in Ghana. It is an encouraging step towards recovery, rather than a claim that the species is now safe in the wild.
