BEFORE YOU CREATE

Which photo makes a better pet portrait?

The best starting point is a photograph where you can recognise the individual pet before adding a style. Sharp eyes, visible markings and space around the ears make it easier to check the result. You can create and download a portrait free before choosing a physical gift.

1. Check the eyes at full size

Open the original photo and zoom in on the eyes and nose. If those features are blurred, a larger print will not restore the missing detail. Choose the original camera file where possible; a screenshot or a photo copied repeatedly through messaging can lose detail.

2. Take the photo at their eye level

Crouch down so the camera is close to the dog or cat’s eye level. Keep their face visible and allow space around the ears, whiskers and chest. A clear face-on or gently angled view is usually easier to check than a photograph taken from far above or across a room.

3. Use soft light and a simple background

Try daylight near a window or outdoors in open shade. Avoid a bright window directly behind the pet, which can leave the face dark. For a black coat, check that you can still see the eyes and fur detail; for a white coat, check that the light has not washed out the facial outline.

4. Keep their distinctive details visible

Look for the features their owner knows: an uneven ear, a white chest patch, a particular eye colour or a little grey around the muzzle. Choose a photo without a hand, toy or blanket covering those details. Use a photograph you own or have permission to use.

5. Choose the gift format before the final crop

A portrait print needs room around the head so the ears do not meet the edge. A mug wrap is much wider than a portrait photograph; use the editor preview to check the actual placement and wording. Do not stretch a narrow image to fill a wide area. For a larger print, pay attention to any image-quality warning.

6. Review the likeness before sharing or buying

AI artwork can interpret details differently. Compare the finished portrait with the source photograph: check eyes, ears, markings, paws, spelling and the crop. Try another clear photo or a different style if the pet no longer looks familiar. Review the complete product preview before approving a paid order.

What if it is the only photo you have?

For an older photograph or a memorial gift, start with the best available file and try the free digital version. A soft or partially hidden face may need a gentler style, but no style guarantees an exact reconstruction. Check that the recipient would welcome a memorial gift before ordering it.
